  1. Central to America’s foreign policy in the post-war period was the containment of the Soviet Union and communism. During the Cold War, the United States competed with the Soviet Union militarily and economically. Both sides created huge military forces and nuclear weapons. Even though the U.S and the Soviet Union never went to war, the effect of the Cold War was big. The first change in the U.S was the government and its growth. Because they were dealing with more things all over the world, they needed more bureaucracies, like the National Security Agency. Another effect was an anti-communist wave. Everyone was suspected as a communist, so a tougher foreign policy was made. New programs were created to create strategies for different situations and to better understand the Third world. One of these programs would be the RAND Corporation. Because of this cold war, the U.S became a lot more secure, but no one really trusted anyone because of the constant thought of communist and spies.

  2. Throughout the Cold War, it remained evident that European powers were fighting with a plethora of power, making foreign relations amongst the world very shaky. With that said, the policy of Containment was created.

Ultimately, George F. Kennan’s policy of Containment was the only solution to contain Russia and their expansion tendencies. The goals of the policy of Containment were that of restoring the balance of powers amongst foreign nations, reducing the ability to project outside power of the Soviets, and modifying the Soviet concept of internment relations. Moreover, containment of the Soviet Union became central to American foreign policy, and the United States used both economic and military means to carry out this policy.

In addition, the policy of containment also led to changes in the government and the economy. The New Economic Policy was a stepping stone to stabilizing the economic depression of the United States. Not to mention, a prodigious message of containment was that of Communism and the fear of it. America feared Communism to such an extent that the country did anything it could to deplete Communistic powers/ threats of the Soviets and Russia. The country found it necessary to increase its measures for building up national security. NO COMMUNISTS! In short, the policy of containment affected the United States throughout the 20th Century and into the 21st century in a manner that changed the way the economics, national security, and foreign policies the country.

  3. The "Containment" policy wasn't put in to place to get rid of communism, but to just stop it from spreading to any countries it hasn't already reached. Though the U.S. and the soviets never actually went to war, the affects of the cold war sure made it feel like they did. The constant competition of the two, militarily and economically, paved the way for most of are amazing advances of technology today. National government agencies were birthed from the cold war and without the weapons made back then, we might not have ipods or iphones today.

  4. After the end of World War II, The United States became increasingly fearful of the threat stemming from communist Soviet Union. George Kennan suggested that the only way contain the Soviet’s “relentlessly expansionary” (Kennedy) was with “firm and vigilant containment.” (Kennedy) Kennan created the containment policy dubbed the “containment doctrine” (Kennedy)

This “containment doctrine” was only part of Truman’s “get-tough-with-Russia” policy in 1947 (Kennedy). With the doctrine, Truman also assisted European allies against the advancing communist threat – The Soviet Union. In fact Truman asked for “$400 million to bolster Greece and Turkey” to assist these two countries fight the war against communism. Truman stated that “it must be the policy of the United States to support free peoples who are resisting attempted subjugation by sweeping and open-ended commitment of vast and worrisome proportions”. In other words, the United States would assist anyone who believed the same as they, which, in this time, were those against communism.

The Marshall Plan developed out of the United States policy for containment. Much of Western Europe was still suffering from hunger and economic turmoil. Because of this chaos they were incredibly vulnerable to malicious forces a.k.a. communists. The financial assistance provided to Western Europe as a result of the passing of this plan turned previous enemies, such as Germany, Italy, and France, into allies. This created better international relations with these countries and helped quell Truman’s fear of “revived isolationism” (Kennedy)

The containment policy, although beneficial for the United States in regards to Western Europe, caused conflict between the United States and the USSR, also known as the Cold War. Through the Cold War came organizations such as National Security Council (NSC) , The Central Intelligence Agency (CIA), North Atlantic Treat Organization (NATO) and also The Department of Defense, all dedicated to protecting this country and allies against the Soviet Threat.

In summation, the policy of containment helped created between the United States and countries not affect by communism, while controlling and "containing" those affected by communism.

  5. The Cold War was the most important political and diplomatic issue of the early postwar period.America's foreign policy in the post-war period was the containment of the Soviet Union and communism. America was competing with the Soviet Union milatery and economically. The Soviet Union was trying to spread communism and America was trying to spread democracy to third world countries. The US use economics and military to stop this spread. Both the U.S. and the Soviet Union both build up their military and created nuculear weapons. The Cold War had a huge effect on the U.S. One effect was the U.S. created new government agencies, like the CIA. Another effect was an anti-communist wave. Everyone in America was afraid of people being a Soviet spy.New programs were created to create strategies for different situations and to better understand the Third world programs like the RAND Corporation.America also would give suport to other countries who would go to war with in their own countries hopefully that the side they suport would become a democracy. We still do this even to this day.The cold war caused a great change in the U.S national security, and foreign policies. Even today in the 21st century the U.S. has spies in other countries and we still give mililtary to other countries to help stop spread of a certain type of government thats not like our own. And of stead of being afraid and fighting against communist we are fighting against terroriss.

  6. The Containment affected us by not affecting us. The containment plan was used to keep communism from spreading out of the area's it had already reached. By doing so, we hoped it would die out in those places. If communism was allowed to spread, how we live now might be totally different. We might all be working hard and only expecting the same thing as every other person in the country, which wouldn't be fair because it would influence us not to work hard because it wouldn't even matter.

  7. The Containment was something to just stop the movement of communism. It was designed to eventually exterminate the communist but by suppressing the influence in the regions they have not been in. It was more of a defensive strategy then an offensive strategy. We was to help the regions like, South Korea, to keep communist out. We knew eventually that if the communist grew and grew they was to come for their rivals of democracy. So therefore we had to support the places that did not want them to be overcome by communist and in the end we would have kept the limits of the communist to a control, so to speak.
